Lock it down: making sure your bank account is extra secure

While your account comes with advanced security features, it’s important to remain vigilant and take further measures to protect yourself in the digital space.

Here are a few measures you can take to level up your account security.

Update your contact details

Security questions are so last year. The two-factor authentication process we implemented when we launched EQ Bank will soon be the mandatory (and most secure!) way to get into your account. What does this mean for you? Make sure your phone number and email are up to date so you’re able to breeze through login quickly and safely.

Save your spot

If you bank via your desktop, make sure you bookmark the login page. Prefer handheld banking? Download our secure banking app on the App Store or Google Play. This will ensure you get the latest updates and security features without having to lift a finger.

A word on WiFi

When banking on the go, be sure you are using data or a secure WiFi network you trust. Using the coffee shop’s WiFi to conduct banking may seem convenient, however open networks like this aren’t always guaranteed to be safe.

Password protected

Make sure your password is strong and impossible to guess. Your birthday, pet’s name or favourite team is not going to cut it. It might go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway - don’t share your password with anyone. If you need your spouse, bestie, or roommate to have regular access to an account, consider opening a joint account instead.

Consistency is key

Make it a habit to log in to your account on a regular basis and review your transactions. See something that doesn’t look right? Contact us right away. Once you’re finished with your banking, log out and close your browser if you’re banking on your desktop.

Stay alert

A great way to stay on top of your account activity is to enable SMS or email alerts so you can easily keep track of deposits, transfers, and bill payments.

Play favourites

We all have a few folks we send money to on a regular basis. Consider adding them to your favourites in the Interac e-Transfer® menu and rest easy knowing your money will get where it needs to go.
